Mission ****************************************************************************************** * ****************************************************************************************** The Deutsch Security Square is a research centre established at the Department of Internat Institute of Political Studies [ URL "http://ips.fsv.cuni.cz/ipseng-1.html"] , Faculty of Sciences [ URL "http://fsveng.fsv.cuni.cz"] of the Charles University in Prague [ URL "htt uken-1.html"] . It has been founded with the aim to promote collective research of securit tradition of the scholarship of Karl Deutsch seeking, in his words, "more knowledge for gr and more compassion." While Karl Deutsch (1912-1992) rose to academic fame as one of the titans of political sci United States, the Charles University, one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Eastern Europe, proudly recognizes him as its alumnus. It was at the university’s Law Facu fluent in both German and Czech, received his juris doctor degree (1938) before fleeing th that was about to befall his homeland. He would not come back, and following a long and di career, he ended his days in Cambridge, Massachussetts. To pay tribute to Deutsch's intell the Charles University was one of the convenors of a Prague conference celebrating his cen and the Centre has recently become entrusted with the custody of his personal library, a r books from a wide variety of fields of human interest that his family wished was moved to passing. The square in the Centre’s name metaphorically alludes to an agora as a space where ideas traded and shared, and where those who enter can join in a dialogue. It also refers to fou collective research interest: conflict resolution and transformation, strategic studies, s security and critical security studies agenda including inquiries into the interplay of se technology in today’s global politics. We strive for academic excellence without prejudice in terms of methodology as long as the theoretically sound, innovative and thorough. The ethos of Deutschian scholarship we seek one that rests less on methodological assumptions about the possibility of measuring and m reality; and more on the emphasis of rigorous, transparent, collective and transdisciplina We take inspiration from Karl Deutsch's liberal approach to security, and take seriously t the realist paradigm by striving to zoom in and out of the ‘leviathan’ of the modern state about security, stressing the importance of both norms, ideas and discourses; and of socia (in)security. The focus on the latter situates our inquires at the intersection of interna and international political sociology that thinks beyond the state institutions and even e and knowledges. (If you wish to read more about the currency of Deutschian scholarship and directions of following Karl Deutsch's intellectural heritage, we invite you to read intro by Richard Ned Lebow, here [ URL "DSS-5-version1-lebow_essay.pdf"] , and Ondrej Ditrych, h version1-ditrych_essay.pdf"] .) In addition to academic endeavour traditionally conceived, we seek also to speak to broade to cultivate the debate on security issues and policies. This is being done by means of re of our security briefs that provide concise, theoretically informed and practically releva on global security issues of the day; and public events where outcomes of our academic res mediated to the broader interested public.
